Major retailer fined in rat infestation case – Noémi Byrd and Doug Scott represented Somerset Council

CDS (Superstores International) Ltd, owners of The Range chain of home and garden stores, was fined £960,000 reduced to £640,000 for an early guilty plea, for seven offences under the Food Hygiene Regulations in a prosecution by Somerset Council following a severe rat infestation at its Taunton store. Guilty pleas were entered to offences of failing to have adequate procedures in place to control pests, failing to protect food from contamination, failing to keep food premises clean, placing unsafe food on the market, and contravention of a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order. Noémi Byrd and Doug Scott acted for Somerset Council.
