Jill Barrett speaks at the 2018 Global Ocean Regime Conference

Jill Barrett is in South Korea participating as an invited speaker in the 2018 Global Ocean Regime Conference, which is taking place on Jeju Island from 16-18 May. She gave a presentation today on ‘The international law framework for co-operation on law enforcement in overlapping maritime zones’. The overall conference theme is ‘Promoting Co-operation in Overlapping Maritime Areas.’ This event has brought together law of the sea and oceans experts from around the world, including International Law of the Sea Tribunal Judge Paik Jin-hyun (President), Judge Neeru Chadha and Judge Shunji Yanai, and former Judge Helmut Turk as well as Larry Awosika and Martin Heinesen, Members of the ‘Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf’, and academics and practitioners from Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and of course Korea. It is hosted by the Korea Maritime Institute, and sponsored by the Ministry for Oceans and Fisheries.
Jill Barrett is co-editor of the book, Law of the Sea; UNCLOS as a Living Treaty, BIICL 2016, and was Director of the BIICL research team that published the ‘Report on the Obligations of States under Articles 74(3) and 83(3) of UNCLOS in respect of Undelimited Maritime Areas’, BIICL, 2017, available online here.
