Richard Barraclough KC and Thomas Stern act for Defendant, Anthony Esan, who Pleads Guilty to Attempted Murder of Army Officer
January 8, 2026

Anthony Esan has admitted the attempted murder of Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton, outside Brompton Barracks last July.
Esan appeared via video link from Broadmoor Hospital at Maidstone Crown Court on 8 January, when he pleaded guilty to charges of attempted murder and possession of two bladed weapons.
On 23 July 2024, Lt Col Teeton, 47, wearing his military uniform, was stabbed multiple times in Sally Port Gardens – just yards from the barracks home of the Royal School of Military Engineering. Esan allegedly ambushed Lt Col Teeton, pulling him to the ground before inflicting serious injuries with a number of knives.
Following the attack, legal proceedings were repeatedly postponed while Esan underwent psychiatric evaluation in order to determine whether he was mentally fit to plead.
Sentencing is scheduled for 9-11 February 2026 at Maidstone Crown Court when three consultant psychiatrists are likely to give evidence to the Court.
Kent Police reported no evidence linking the attack to terrorism, and tightened security at Brompton Barracks was provided only briefly following the incident. Defence Secretary John Healey described the attack as “shocking”.
