London taxi driver acquitted of causing serious injury by dangerous driving

A London taxi driver represented by Thomas Stern has been acquitted of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Idrissa Bangura was alleged to have fallen asleep behind the wheel whilst driving his black taxi through Knightsbridge in February 2016. The taxi collided with a concrete barrier at the entrance to the Hyde Park Corner underpass and a passenger in the rear of the vehicle was thrown from his seat and sustained severe and life-changing head injuries. Mr Bangura vehemently denied falling asleep but accepted his attention had been distracted by a problem with the vehicle’s accelerator pedal. The jury at Southwark Crown Court returned a guilty verdict on a lesser alternative of careless driving, for which Mr Bangura received penalty points and a fine.
