Jemima Lovatt secures acquittal on all counts in rape trial.

November 5, 2025

Jemima Lovatt, prosecuted by King’s Counsel, has secured the unanimous acquittal of a defendant who faced two charges of rape, two charges of assault by penetration and one charge of sexual assault.

The prosecution case included the complainant, a friend of the complainant who was present in a room near to the alleged incident and contemporaneous text messages reporting the alleged incident. Despite the strength of the case against the defendant, Jemima was able to undermine the credibility of the witnesses by drawing out their inconsistencies in cross examination and bringing the case for the defence together in her closing speech.

Jemima was instructed by Nyara Goonewardena of SVS Solicitors.
